Basketball Championship Winners Throw Tortillas At Predominantly Hispanic Competing Team
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a high school summer game. For Coronado High School, their California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championship home game wasn’t any different. They met up with old friends, played a good game, cheered on their schools’ team, talked about their plans for the summer and school year ahead; and threw tortillas at the opposing predominantly Hispanic team when they lost.
High school games can often get heated, especially when the teams are playing a championship game. This championship head-to-head had high stakes, considering it was a CIF game meant taking the place of a have been a state championship game due to COVID-19 restrictions. Sometimes, the losing team can be sore losers. In this case, however, when the Orange Glen Patriots Boys’ Basketball Team lined up to shake hands with the victors, the Coronado High School Islanders, it was the winning school’s students who were sore winners, throwing handfuls of tortillas at them as they passed.
